5 Tips to Make a Good Summary

Summary means making a brief detail of the original passage. A good review is one-third of the actual passage. It must cover all the important points. It is also known as "Precis." There are five skills for making a summary.

1) Generalization :

This means to give one general word for a long list of words, e.g., " oranges. Bananas, apples, grapes, pears, watermelons. " All of these we use the word "fruit."

2) Selection of  Facts :

It is very essential to select the most important points in the passage & reject detail having little or no importance.

3) Compressing :

To squeeze several words into one word or phrase, for example, we can use 'visible' for the phrase: "That which can't be seen.

4) Use of Indirect Speech :

We may change the passage from direct speech to indirect speech. After this, we are free to summarize what has been said.

5) Personal Opinion :

Personal opinion should be avoided.
